for three years during my elementary school days we lived in st. louis, mo. growing up my mom was a stay at home mom who made our lunches everyday. (okay, she made my lunch up until the day i graduated high school, i was a lucky kid). anyways, not too far from our house was a hotess bakery. in my family every meal ends with desserts so of course we had dessert in our lunches my mom packed. we usually got homemade cookies, or ho-hos, or oreos...well, you get the point. so upon moving to st. louis my mom started going to the hostess bakery to get bread and snack foods and what nots but then we discovered a delicious hostess snack cake called the chocolicious. it was amazing. chocolate cake with chocolate filling and chocolate icing. they were the perfect lunch dessert. we soon left st. louis and moved to texas in '93. we searched for chocolicious in texas, and we just couldn't find them. we would drive back to st. louis to visit and bring back boxes of these tasty little treats. a few years went by and they stopped making the chocolicious. the costello family was a little upset. to this day when any of us see a hostess bakery outlet we stop in to see if they have our chocolate delight. and they never do. zingers don't come close. they don't have the chocolate filling.
so i wake up this morning with an email from my mom. and all it's titles is chocolicious. well, apparently someone at king arthur flour felt as strongly as we did about the scrumptious cake and decided to come up with a recipe for it.
so next week on my days off i am going to try to recreate my favorite childhood snack food. i am so stoked about it.
and i am a total nerd.
